In the early 1950s, we developed the industry’s first low-pressure extruder and dies to produce pretzels and other extruded snacks. It was a major technological development that helped change the shape of the industry.

Low-Pressure Extruder

The Reading Pretzel Low Pressure (LP) Extruder enables you to create various structural and flat extruded and co-extruded shapes and sticks. It allows for high-speed production of complex shapes by forcing dough through dies mounted on the end of the extruder and is a flexible alternative to conventional dough forming and sheeting systems.

For maximum flexibility, create a variety of snacks on one production line, including hard pretzel shapes, sticks, braids, crackers, sushki, and co-extruded products. Exchange one compression head and die for another with a different shape, and complete product changeover in just minutes.

The LP Extruder has been redesigned with:

  • augers that deliver more product flow with less work
  • new lightweight, seamless hoppers that eliminate harborage areas
  • pre-feed rolls made of food-safe plastics
  • an improved cutting mechanism with a longer service life
  • improved guarding for better safety
  • a band cutter hat is positioned away from the product zone to reduce contamination and provide easier maintenance

Filled Stick Extruder

The Reading Pretzel Filled Stick Extrusion System enables you to create sticks filled with soft fillings, such as chocolate, peanut butter, or cheese. The system consists of a Low Pressure (LP) Extruder and pump system that pushes the soft filling through a compression head and die so that it fills the dough rope formed by the extruder.

Exchange die plates & compression head assemblies for quick product changeovers. The Filling System can be mated to an existing Extruder by adding the pump stand and changing the die and compression head assembly. The rope can then be cut into equal-length sticks or nuggets by the downstream Guillotine Cutter. 

Fried Snack Extruder 

When your application involves fried snack extruded products, the Reading Pretzel Fried Snack Extruder offers a flexible solution and can produce innovative product shapes.

A band cutter blade operates in two different modes and at speeds up to 260 cuts per minute, cleanly slicing the extruded dough stream at the die face for a consistent, well-defined product. Product changeover is easy to accomplish by exchanging one compression head and die for another with a different shape.

High-Pressure Extruder

Mix and cook ingredients with the High-Pressure Extruder to produce expanded shapes, including curls, popcorn shapes, rings, and balls. A flexible design enables quick and easy changeover of screws, barrels, and product dies to create a wide range of products with exciting textures and flavors in different shapes.
